What I drink every morning

rcaNUh3pQ9GD8w7Iy8qE__DSC0940Every morning, when I get up, I make myself a nice hot cup of ginger tea with lemon. It’s warm and delicious but that’s not the only reason why I drink it. This simple drink packs a powerful healing punch that is a great way to start the day.

Ginger is an herb with awesome anti-inflammatory properties and is great for the digestion. It’s used to treat symptoms like nausea, cancer and other inflammatory diseases. Ginger’s awesome superpowers are so concentrated that you only need a small bit to take advantage of all it’s healing properties. It doesn’t seem right to take advantage of a superhero, does it? Do it anyway! You can read all about how amazing ginger is here.

Lemon is high in Vitamin C, a powerful healing antioxidant that your immune system needs. Drinking lemon with ginger in the morning is reported to be detoxifying the the liver. Find out more here.

Recently, I started adding one more herb to my daily cup- turmeric. This spice is constantly in the news for being amazing. It’s like a Hollywood A lister of the nutrition world and all the paparazzi follow it around, reporting on everything it does. And let me tell you, turmeric get’s around! New reports come out almost daily of turmeric’s power to combat everything from cancer to rheumatoid arthritis. You definitely want to find a way to include this little darling into your diet. This tea is one easy way. Read even more about turmeric here.

Gingturmericer and turmeric both look similar. Here is a pic of turmeric to the left. I actually keep these little root things (I don’t think it’s actually a root, but for the sake of simplicity, let’s pretend like it is). Anyway, I just pop the whole root into a plastic bag in the freezer. Then, when I get up in the morning and I’ve got the water in my tea kettle all nice and hot and boiling, I take out my handy dandy micro-plane zester and grate a 1/2 teaspoon or so of each (a little less for turmeric- it’s got kind of a strong flavor). It’s actually much easier to grate when it’s frozen than fresh. It’s also easier to peel in my opinion. Just take a small paring knife and peel away the skin before grating the root into your cup. Next, I add the juice of half a lemon. Drink up! Your immune system will thank you!
