Skincare Expert Q & A

skincare q and aDarling, toxins in skincare are so passe.  Who wants to rub some “miracle” cream onto your skin that doesn’t live up to it’s promises, while making you sick, fat and depressed in the process? Yes, your skincare products really can do all that.

Or, you can choose to get smart about your skincare and start using products that nourish and rejuvenate the skin on the cellular level- products that actually live up to their promise to create healthier, glowing skin. It’s up to you.

Personally, when I started to delve into the research on toxins in skincare, I was a tad annoyed (have I mentioned that before?)  I made a commitment to myself to quit buying products that were damaging my body and only purchase products from companies who care about my health as much as they do their bottom line.

Because hidden toxins in products we use every day are so hard to spot- and so ubiquitous in our society, I decided something must be done! When my next book hits the shelves this fall, I will be happily saving wonderful women (and men) who are exhausted and unhealthy by showing them how to ditch the toxins in their diet and lives so they can feel like a million bucks again! (I think I’ll earn my superhero cape for this one 🙂

In my research into toxins in our health and beauty products, I had the exciting opportunity to interview Trina Felber, founder and CEO of Primal Life Organics, a truly all natural skincare company that delivers on its promise to nourish and feed your skin at the cellular level.

Here’s a few of the best tidbits from that interview on how to make sure the skincare products you are putting on each day aren’t slowly killing you.

Skin Care Q & A with Trina Felber

Question: What are some of the top toxins in our makeup and skincare  products that we should e aware of as consumers?

Trina’s Answer:  When the word Fragrance is listed on the ingredients label of a product, it’s actually a chemical bath composed of any number of the 35,000 different chemicals that can be combined to create “fragrance.” Because the label doesn’t list these individual ingredients, you have no idea what you are putting on your skin. Many of these chemicals are known endocrine disruptors and carcinogens, as well as causing damage to the reproductive tract.

Ingredients like parabens, and phthalates are also widely used in skincare products and have the same track record of disrupting our hormones, causing cancer and reproductive damage as well infertility.

Finally, water is often listed first as an ingredient on many products. Besides the fact that you are paying big bucks for a product that is mostly water, the fact is that the water used in these products is no filtered. Whatever toxins are found in the polluted water is delivered straight to your skin.  As if that weren’t enough, the truth is that water in skin creams and lotions actually does nothing for your skin and in fact actually pulls moisture out of the skin as the product evaporates!

(PS from Michelle- I was super surprised when Trina mentioned water as one of the top toxins in skincare products! I mean, it’s natural right? Who knew how worthless it was as a skincare ingredient, right?)
Question:   So many people are duped into thinking their skincare products are safe and even beneficial when in fact they are actually causing harm.  How can a person educate themselves on whether or not a product is truly or safe or if it contains harmful ingredients?

Trina’s answer: Look at the Label! Create a habit of bypassing the marketing hype on the front of the label and turn the product over to take a closer look at the ingredients.  If you don’t know what the ingredient is, it’s probably safe to assume it’s a synthetic chemical with the potential to be toxic to the body.  If it has numbers, like 1,2-, diethel-, etc, it’s definitely a chemical made in a lab and you should steer clear!
I can’t wait to share everything Trina told me in our interview! She was a wealth of knowledge on toxins in our skincare. Don’t worry, you’ll be the first to know when the book is out on the shelves! In the meantime, you can visit Trina and check out her amazing skincare products at PrimalLifeOrganics.com.
PS- This is the last post in toxins in our skincare- next week I’ve got something new for you!
