My motto is "Eat for happy hormones," and this smoothie fits the bill. Don't you automatically feel healthier just saying the word "smoothie"? It kinda makes me feel like a hip, trendy mom with my smoothie in one hand while applying hormone- balancing essential oils to my chakras with the other.
Unfortunately, many smoothies aren't really all that healthy- laden with sugar and lacking in essential nutrients, like healthy fats, they're really just a blood-sugar-imbalance nightmare waiting to happen. Read on to find out how to build the perfect smoothie for perfectly balanced hormones.
Picking a Protein Powder
Protein powders are a quick, easy way to increase your protein intake, which is important for keeping blood sugar balanced. Just make sure you pick a quality protein powder that doesn't include added sugar or fillers. A few of my favorite options are Ancient Nutrition Bone Broth Protein (any flavor), or any of the Garden of Life protein powders.
You can also use collagen powder from grass-fed cows if you want an unflavored source of protein. Not only does this pure protein source contain high concentrations of amino acids that improve the integrity of the gut and improve digestion, it's also free of the fillers and additives most protein powders come saddled with.
Add In Healthy Fats
We're also going to throw in a dose of healthy fats to make sure our bodies can absorb all those gorgeous nutrients and phytochemicals from the berries. Ghee is one of my fav sources of healthy fat- it's high in nutrients like Vitamin A and D and has a delicious buttery taste.
You can also use coconut oil in your smoothie- it's great for the gut and your thyroid. Just realize it will harden when cold, so keep your blender moving to break up any chunks that are in there. Your hormones love healthy fats so don't skimp on them! Let's make sure while we're sipping away, we're also giving our hormones some love, shall we?
Throwing a raw egg yolk in gives you one more way to boost your intake of healthy fats and those important fat-soluble nutrients, vitamin D and vitamin A, that so many of us mommas are deficient in. If the thought of downing a raw egg yolk sounds disgusting, just leave it out.
Hormone Balancing Breakfast Smoothie
Throw it in your blender and give it a whirl!
- 1 cup coconut milk or almond milk
- 1 tablespoon grass-fed collagen powder OR 1 scoop of high quality protein powder, any flavor
- 1 cup frozen blueberries, cherries or raspberries
- 1 spoonful ghee, coconut oil or other healthy fat
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon
- dash of real salt
- 1 raw egg yolk from organic, pastured chickens, optional
- Add a tiny amount of raw, unfiltered honey to sweeten, but don't go overboard (optional)
Doesn't this sound delicious and perfect for breakfast now that the weather is warming up and you can have something cool and refreshing without having to put on your snow parka? I think so too.
P.S. Did I mention that adding cinnamon stabilizes your blood sugar and helps keep your hormones on an even keel? I love it when food tastes great and improves your health!
